Audio Mastering (or CD Mastering as some call it) is the final, most important step in the recording chain.
In basic terms Mastering is the process of transferring your final demo into a "master" that is used for duplication and playback on a multitude of different playback systems. The specific medium of the mastered audio varies depending on the intended release format of the final product. This chosen medium is then used as the 'master' copy from which all further production of the audio material will be based.
In essence it is the 'sweetening' of your music and adding 'punch' to give you that definitive sound. For this reason it is often said to be 'the difference between a demo and a record'.
As well as correcting any recording problems our audio
mastering process will improve the overall tone, levels and dynamic range
of your tracks whilst defining an appropriate balance for the final sequence.
We will also adjust the EQ levels to give your tracks clarity and definition
and apply compression techniques to help 'glue' the overall mix together.
Well to be truthful, you can use mastering software and do it yourself! However, 95% of mastering is not in the tools you use - it's in the ears. Unless you have the ears of an experienced mastering engineer you are not going to reach that definitive sound that your after. Are you really going to know how your tracks will sound when played through a ridiciusly loud venue sound system?
In addition the whole point of using a trained mastering engineer is to cast an objective set of ears over your tracks to make any required changes prior to release, something that mastering software cannot provide. All of our engineers have great ears in this regard, they use the very best audio equipment and dedicated Digital Audio Workstations to bring you outstanding results.
